Micro Structure
Highly Pearlitic, with predominantly type D, size 6-8 graphite in the rim of the bar with some amount of ferrite, and predominantly Type VII, A, size 4-6 graphite in the core of the bar. The matrix will be highly pearlitic in the core. Chill carbides will be less then 5% well dispersed at (100x magnification).
Heat Treat Response
Class 40 Gray Iron can be hardened by conventional heat treat methods to Rc 50 minimum. Hardness will decline to below Rc 50 beginning at approximately 0.200" Deep.
